Animal Humane Society adoption centers in Coon Rapids and Golden Valley will reopen at noon on Tuesday, May 16. The Board of Animal Health has lifted its quarantine of those facilities, clearing the way for AHS to fully reopen and resume its services this week.

Hundreds of animals waiting at AHS since April 6 will finally be available for adoption — including the nearly 200 dogs who have recovered from canine influenza and are no longer contagious.

AHS staff have a special bond with the animals they have been caring for during the six-week quarantine. “We are excited for these animals to find their loving homes,” says AHS President and CEO Janelle Dixon. “They have been waiting a long time.”

Dixon is hoping to find homes for as many animals as possible this week. “Our shelters are full, and there are more animals in our community waiting for our help.”

AHS will provide adopters with details about each animal’s medical history, including information about post-quarantine care. Dogs who have recovered from canine influenza should not be able to spread or catch it for several months.

Services in Coon Rapids and Golden Valley will resume in stages, with training classes and education programs returning on Monday, May 15, adoption centers reopening on Tuesday, May 16, and intake and veterinary services resuming next week.

AHS closed its adoption centers on April 6 to contain an outbreak of canine influenza. The AHS adoption center in Woodbury reopened on May 9.
