53 dogs removed from northern Minnesota property

Last week, Animal Humane Society removed 51 adult dogs and two puppies – all hound mixes – from a rural property in northern Minnesota. The dogs were surrendered by an individual who was unable to provide adequate care and shelter for them. AHS Humane Agent Wade Hanson worked with the Pine County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the case, which also led to the removal of horses and other farm animals.

AHS medical and behavioral staff are evaluating the dogs and providing socialization, rehabilitation, and care to help prepare them for adoption. Because they were kept outside, tied up with little human interaction, these animals will require patience and understanding to safely transition to a new home. AHS will provide behavioral support to those who adopt dogs from this case, including a free 30-minute private training session. To view the dogs ready for adoption, look for a “Special Projects” notation on their kennel card or website profile.

All in a day's work

They say it takes a village, and we have one amazing village indeed. The complex work that goes into caring for the animals in our shelters and our community is made possible by an incredible team of more than 350 employees in 80 different roles, along with more than 2,400 volunteers lending assistance. Each person involved in our work plays an integral part in supporting our mission of engaging the hearts, hands, and minds of the community to help animals. We truly couldn’t do all that we do without each and every person, and are excited to share with you a glimpse into the lifesaving work happening every day at AHS.

A little supporter with a great big heart

Every donation we receive is met with gratitude, and it's especially inspiring when our youngest supporters want to help out. Animal lover Alexi recently sent us a $12 donation – which happens to be her whole monthly allowance! We were so touched by her generosity, and so delighted by her adorable letter, that we wanted to share it with our supporters. Read Alexi’s letter on our Facebook page and prepare to have your heart warmed.

18,977 reasons to say thank you (including Tallulah!)

Last year, nearly 19,000 animals were adopted from our five locations. We are so grateful for each individual and family who has opened their hearts and homes to provide a loving new life for an AHS animal. One of those adopters is Colleen, who adopted a sweet hound named Tallulah who spent time at four of our adoption centers before finding a home. We recently received an update on Tallulah and it appears her time spent waiting was well worth it!
