The AnSWER Program (Animal Surrender with Evaluation Report) Each year the Animal Humane Society receives more than 23,000 unwanted or homeless animals. While every effort is made to place as many animals as possible into good homes, it is simply not possible for the Society to find homes for all of them. Each animal surrendered to the Society is evaluated for placement based on health, temperament, age and space available. If the animal meets the criteria for placement, it is offered for adoption. If not, it is humanely euthanized. The Society does not impose a time limit on animals available for adoption. Because of the high volume of animals received and limited staff, the Society is unable to answer inquiries as to the final disposition of each animal received. Not knowing if an animal passed the placement evaluation can be a concern for some persons surrendering an animal. The Society’s AnSWER Program (Animal Surrender With Evaluation Report) is for those pet owners who want to be informed of the placement evaluation results and want the option to reclaim the animal if the Society determines the pet cannot be offered for adoption. For a non-refundable fee of $75.00, together with background and health information, the Society’s placement evaluation team will evaluate the animal for possible placement. Animal evaluations are done by our staff of veterinary medical professionals with the assistance of specialists from our behavior/training department. Once the evaluation is complete, the surrenderer is called with the results. If we can place the animal, it will go to the Society’s adoption center and await a new home. If we are unable to place the animal, the person surrendering the animal can decide to reclaim the pet within twenty-four (24) hours or leave the animal with the Society to be humanely euthanized. Animal evaluations can take from one to seven days from the date the pet was brought in and the surrenderer will be contacted by phone with the evaluation results. Please be sure to give us home, work and cell numbers so we are able to reach you promptly! Please note the evaluation report is a one-time contact. No other information can be released about an animal’s status after the initial report. While most pets remain available for adoption once passing the placement criteria, changes in an animal’s health or temperament while at the shelter may make re-evaluation necessary. Any additional evaluations will be without notification to the surrenderer and decisions regarding the pet’s continued adoptability will be at the discretion of the Society. To be accepted into this program, animals must be brought to the Society during normal Incoming Animal business hours. We are unable to accept pets to this program if left in the after-hours drop-off area or if previously admitted under normal surrender policies. If you are interested in placing an animal on the Society’s AnSWER Program, please talk to one of our staff. They will be happy to assist you. |
