Volunteers needed for the Walk for Animals

It takes nearly 300 volunteers working alongside Animal Humane Society staff to put on the Walk for Animals. In addition to having fun and getting that warm-fuzzy feeling from helping a great cause, volunteers also receive a special 2016 Walk for Animals T-shirt!

Here are just some of the ways you can help out at the Walk:

  • Walker check-in
  • Games and activities
  • Traffic and crowd control
  • Assistance on the Walk route
  • Pre-event tasks

You can encourage friends and family to volunteer as well. Walk volunteers must be 16 years of age or older, though some roles require a minimum age of 18. Assignment confirmations will be given as we near the event. We are eager to provide a fun and exciting volunteer experience for you!

Hamming it up at Animal House
(warning: cute video)

From cats and dogs to turtles and chickens, staff at Animal House pet boarding care for a wide variety of animals while their humans are away. Located within AHS’s Golden Valley facility, Animal House has been providing safe and affordable pet boarding for more than 10 years.

Last month, a 1-year-old pig named Hamlet stayed at Animal House for 10 days. "The Animal House staff has been absolutely amazing — they treat Hamlet like a king!" says Hamlet’s owner Katie. "You can tell he enjoys being there because he goes into his area and wags his tail at the staff member without being distraught that we are leaving. And when he comes home, he doesn’t skip a beat."

Staff members enjoy caring for Hamlet, especially feeding him his favorite treats, including Cheerios and squash. Watch an adorable video of Hamlet’s snack time.

Keep your pets safe from household hazards

From cleaning products to medications, there are certain items in our homes that, although not poisonous to us, can be toxic to our pets. National Poison Prevention Week is March 20-26. To help keep your pets safe, we’ve put together a list of common household items to watch out for.

Captain Jack sails to a new home

Captain Jack

As temperatures in November dipped below freezing, a 6-month-old stray kitten with an injured eye was picked up by a concerned animal lover and brought to AHS. The kitten, named Blackbeard by AHS staff, was nervous and wary of humans at first, but allowed a few chin scratches and was eventually able to be examined. Due to the severity of his eye injury, our veterinary staff determined the best course of treatment was to surgically remove his left eye. Just over a month later, Blackbeard was adopted into a loving home and renamed Captain Jack.
